See the Magic Unfold in Just a Few Lessons! Centurion Art Classes

Weekly Lessons Overview

The focus is on portraits which are considered the most difficult drawings to do, The theory is that if you can draw a person, you can draw anything. The system has been used in many art classes to teach those that cannot draw to understand the basics of drawing and teach them to create artworks that others can enjoy.

Weekly Art Adventures for Ages 8-19

This syllabus is broken down by method and not time. Each child will work to their own time table, some exercises will be given as homework, so that they may practice and develop their skills. I would hope that the parents would encourage and praise the abilities and improvement.

In the beginning.

The first few hours are dedicated to seeing what the children are capable of before we start with the lessons, They will be tasked with a few drawings in the studio, a self portrait looking in the mirror, A drawing of someone without any reference images, a drawing of their own hand and then a picture of a chair. These drawings are not to embarrass or prove inability, They are there to prove progress. exzample of improvement using the Edwards method

Drawing techniques

We will encourage students by comparing early and later drawings by some of the old masters showing their progress; learn about blocking, looking at things from different angles and how to use the right brain, the artistic side rather than the analytical to see what’s there. Exercises include looking at negative space, copying drawings done by other artists, drawing upside down to trick the mind into using the right hand side of the brain and more.

Perspective and more

Learning how to sight a subject is the next phase, using different methods of measuring, different methods of seeing the subject, Getting the proportions right and bringing it all together

The Face

Next we start drawing faces, using the previous lessons about proportion, the different drawing techniques. Drawing faces from different angles and perceptions, focusing on the component parts, eyes, noses, ears, pulling them all together.

The body

Next we look at the component parts of the body, focusing on specific parts, torso, legs, feet, arms, and hands bringing them all together.

Shadows, highlights and shading

Drawing the complete picture

Remember the exercises at the beginning, next we will be redoing those with all of the skills that have been learnt. This is not for points, it’s to show the children what a little learning and practice can offer. Once the student has drawn their pictures, we will move on to colour, discussing the colour wheel, we will start painting with gouache and use the drawing skills to create their own outlines and do the first painting. Once again a self portrait will be the subject. Upon completion of the above, the students will start with drawings and paintings of self selected subjects. Animals, water, still life and landscapes

The Power of Betty Edwards' Method

The Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain system, conceived by Betty Edwards, traces its origins to her extensive research in art education.

Edwards, a psychologist, recognized the untapped creative potential within individuals and developed a method that diverged from conventional artistic instruction. Grounded in neuroscience, this system capitalizes on the brain's right hemisphere, known for its role in spatial perception and holistic thinking.

By engaging this hemisphere through perceptual drawing exercises, Edwards' method facilitates a shift from analytical left-brain dominance to intuitive right-brain processing.

The benefits of this approach are manifold, encompassing enhanced drawing skills, heightened observational abilities, and a profound boost in creative confidence.

Students often experience breakthroughs, transcending self-imposed limitations and tapping into latent artistic talents.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain not only enriches artistic proficiency but also fosters a broader, more intuitive approach to problem-solving, making it a transformative and holistic method for unleashing the creative potential within each practitioner. exzample of improvement using the Edwards method
